This month the Economist hosted the annual War on Cancer (Europe) event in London. One of the key themes for this year was the role of patient outcomes and experience data in shaping research into cancer and the delivery of cancer care.

Singapore Airlines was named the world's best at the Airline Excellence Awards.
To choose the winner, editors from Australia-based aviation website AirlineRatings.com assessed airlines based on the age of their fleet, customer satisfaction, financial performance, investment rating, product range and quality, and employee relations. Singapore Airlines’ victory sees Air New Zealand’s 5 year reign as the world’s best airline come to an end. The Auckland-based airline still performed well, however, and finished in second place. No European or North American airlines made the cut, with all top 10 spots going to Asia-Pacific and Gulf operators. The brand new Muscat International Airport is now officially open.
Timed to coincide with the Sultanate’s 48th National Day celebrations, the new airport currently has an annual capacity of 20 million passengers, but this could rise to 56 million with future development. 1 in 5 NHS doctors say they have experienced bullying in the last 12 months, according to a survey by the British Medical Association.
Twice that number believe that bullying, harassment and undermining of colleagues happens in their workplace, with 1 in 10 participants saying that such behaviour is a frequent occurrence. Aviation is a fast-growing and rapidly evolving industry. There are currently around 4 billion air passengers every year, and this figure is expected to double by 2036. As the industry changes and grows, so does the demand for talent.
New research shows that 64% of UK SME senior managers believe their staff feel valued. However, the number of non-management SME employees who say they feel valued is just 46%.
In a recent survey of HR decision makers in UK organisations with more 250 employees, 92% said they run leadership programmes for current leaders.
However, just 1 in 6 participants said they have a strategy to develop future leaders and 7 in 10 accept that they must do more to identify and invest in the next generation of leadership talent from within their organisation. Tamkeen, a quasi-governmental organisation which provides support to aspiring Bahraini entrepreneurs, has received an award for operating the ‘Best Middle East Government Call Centre’.
