It has been in force for almost a year, but new research suggests that almost 2 in 3 managers haven’t even heard of the UK Apprenticeship Levy and 9 in 10 are not using it to its full potential. Under the government’s scheme to boost productivity by investing in UK human capital and developing vocational skills, the levy is charged at a rate of 0.5% on all employers with an annual pay bill of more than £3 million.
The study, conducted by HR qualifications provider DPG, revealed some of the reasons behind these disappointing figures. 1 in 6 managers think apprenticeships reduce productivity, 1 in 4 sees no benefit in providing them and half rule out ever using the scheme. 4 in 10 managers think the levy does not support apprenticeships in their sector, but the money collected can be used for many business areas other than traditional skilled trades, including customer service, leadership and management training.
