Every year, the aviation industry dishes out awards to high-performing airlines. More recently, equipped by the data from millions of travellers’ online reviews, TripAdvisor has got in on the act. While the awards may be new, the TripAdvisor ‘Top 10 Airlines’ bears more than a passing resemblance to similar league tables published by Skytrax and at the most recent World Airline Awards.
In each case, Asian airlines dominate the rankings, with Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates and EVA Air featuring in all three lists. There are some interesting differences, however. In many ‘top 10 airlines’ lists, UK and US airlines are conspicuous by their absence. In the TripAdvisor league table, Dallas-based Southwest Airlines and British low-cost carrier Jet2.com were ranked 6th and 7th respectively. Meanwhile, ANA All Nippon Airways, Hainan Airlines, Garuda Indonesia and Etihad failed to make the TripAdvisor top 10 despite scoring highly with Skytrax and World Airline Awards judges. Despite being ranked 8th overall, Qatar Airways came out on top for its business class. Singapore Airlines has the most positive reviews for its economy and first class cabins, while Air New Zealand enjoyed the best rated premium economy service. To generate the results, TripAdvisor analysed reviews over a 12-month period, taking into account both the quantity and quality of reviews for each airline.
